Garden Room With A View

We have been fortunate to have worked in some beautiful locations. Overlooking the North Downs, beside championship golf courses, amongst sprawling rural land and even deep in the Cornish countryside but this Garden Room occupies a fabulously unique spot beside a pontoon on the River Avon.

When walking through the side gate of a beautiful thatched cottage in a picture postcard village, you are immediately struck by the simply awe-inspiring access to this wonderful stretch of one of the country’s finest rivers. The next thing that hits you is the silence. This location is both stunning and absolutely, perfectly peaceful. With swans passing by, a familiar gentle breeze and just the odd narrow boat with a skipper waving a friendly greeting.

This project was designed and built for a professional couple who use the house as a weekend retreat and holiday home to escape the busy day-to-day world of city life. The remit was to dismantle the existing, run-down summer house and replace it with something that was striking in its design as well as being a comfortable, year-round space for relaxing and socialising. In fact, a building like this could be used as an occasional bedroom should you have guests.

The garden itself runs steeply up to the house from the river so it was a challenge getting materials in and out. As such we decided to pre manufacture most of the building in our workshops. This not only made the delivery easy but it ensured the build was quick and there was minimal material waste.

The building itself is cedar clad with anthracite grey bi-fold doors and windows, all positioned to make the most of the spectacular view. It is extremely well insulated making the area beside the mooring useable all year round. A plastered and decorated internal finish with hard-wearing laminate floor gives it the feel of a substantial beach house with a grey composite deck leading out towards the river. In fact, it will considerably outperform the house in terms of insulation and soundproofing.
